Chamber Minutes

May 17, 2010

12:05  Call to order of the 11 members present by President Phyllis Herendeen, followed by a call for a motion on the reading of the minutes. Motion made by Carla Fiandt, seconded by Gregg Gorsuch. Carried.

President Herendeen then asked for a motion on the Treasurers report. Motion made by Barb Kirkpatrick, seconded by Lanette McGuire. Carried.

Old Business:  Discussion about the success of the Goodwill truck on May 15. The truck was late getting to Albion once more this year resulting in having to unload goods from vehicles onto the parking lot and then load the goods onto the truck when it arrived. A motion to change the arrival time for the Goodwill truck to 9:30 am and 2:00 pm to finish was made by Beth Shellman, seconded by Chris Magnuson. Carried.

The Townwide garage sale was held May 7& 8 and had 45 vendors  for the event. Beth Shellman said there were a couple of vendors had their sale three days and not two and did not pay the city for a permit for that day. Beth suggested that in 2011 the Townwide Garage sale be advertised for three days starting on Thursday.

Judy Carpenter believes she will have 6 to 8 vendors for the Farmers Market throughout the summer.  One vendor (Mr. Miller) was so enthusiastic he stayed in the rain on the first day. Judy says we are losing vendors to Kendallville & LaGrange because we don’t have enough of a crowd attending.

Judy then reported on the Farm to Fork program details that the state of Indiana is offering. Judy believes that she doesn’t have enough vendors nor expenses (since there is no advertising) to do this program.

The Watering Can committees have started their duties.

NEW BUSINESS:  President Herendeen asked the town board members for a report on the “Albion Fun Day” fundraiser for the fireworks. The Duck race was a success with “lots of tickets sold” and two terrific food vendors selling. Beth Shellman said they now have this years  fireworks paid for. They will be July2.  In the past the Chamber has contributed monetarily to that cost and President Herendeen asked of Chris Magnuson what would be an appropriate  amount.? After much discussion about what amount, Kevin Dreibelbis motioned to give them $250.00 . Lanette McGuire seconded. Carried.

President Herendeen was asked by the American Legion to write a letter of recommendation for a grant for them which she did, but did not hear if they received the grant. Nobody else knew.

Beth Shellman gave the cost of the flowers for the planters on the square and asked if the Chamber wanted to donate towards that bill? Kevin Dreibelbis motioned to give $500.00 to help with those costs. Seconded by Gregg Gorsuch. Carried.

President Herendeen read a Thank You note from the Back Pack program. She then read a letter from  LEAP of Noble County asking for a donation. A discussion was held about how much we can give.  Sally Merriman suggested we draw up rules on who and how much we give. Secretary Kirkpatrick suggested we table that discussion until the next meeting and get on with the matter at hand. Carla Fiandt motioned to give Leap $250.00. Gregg Gorsuch seconded. Motion Carried.

Having concluded the business for this month a motion was made to adjourn at 1:15 pm.

Next meeting will be held on June 21, 12:00 noon, here at the Harvest House.

Sincerely

Barb Kirkpatrick, Secretary
